Chapter 6 - The Basement

The explosion threw Clara violently against the concrete wall.
Ears ringing, she scrambled through the thick gray smoke.
Titan was already on his feet, snarling as the blast door fell inward.
Two heavily armed men stepped through the breach, rifles raised.
The mastiff launched himself through the air like a black missile.
He struck the first gunman in the chest, sending them both crashing into the medical carts.
The second man aimed his rifle at the dog.
Clara grabbed a scalpel from a fallen tray and drove it deep into the man's calf.
He screamed, dropping his weapon to clutch his bleeding leg.
Clara grabbed Adrian by his good arm and hoisted him toward the hidden tunnel.
Titan disengaged from his prey and sprinted after them.
They slid down the steep metal chute into total darkness.
They landed hard on a damp concrete floor that smelled strongly of chemical fumes.
Clara flicked on a small penlight from her pocket.
They were in a massive underground storage bunker directly beneath the mansion.
Adrian leaned heavily against her shoulder, his breathing growing shallow again.
"The garage is just past those steel pillars," he wheezed.
They took two steps forward before Clara heard a terrifying sound.
It was the distinct hiss of liquid pouring from the ceiling vents.

She shined her light up and saw gasoline raining down onto the floor all around them.
A lit flare dropped from the chute above, landing perfectly in the center of the puddle.
