Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Vein

Clara forced her hands to stop shaking.

She packed the wound with hemostatic gauze, pressing down with all her weight.

Adrian groaned in the darkness of his unconscious mind.

"We need to move him to the underground clinic right now," Clara shouted over her shoulder.

She pointed at four specific guards.

"You four, carry him, and do not make sudden movements around the dog."

Titan watched them approach, his golden eyes locked on their hands.

He allowed them to lift his master, but he stayed close enough to bite their ankles.

They rushed down a hidden staircase into a state-of-the-art medical bay.

Doctor Vance, the family's private physician, was already waiting with a gurney.

"Step aside, nurse, I will take it from here," Vance demanded.

Clara refused to move away from the head of the bed.

"His blood pressure is dropping too fast for a single gunshot wound," Clara warned.

Vance ignored her, grabbing a pre-filled IV bag from the counter.

He hastily jammed the needle into Adrian's arm.

Clara watched the clear liquid drip down the plastic tube.

Something about the consistency of the fluid caught her eye.

It was slightly thicker than normal saline, leaving a faint yellow residue on the plastic.

She glanced at the heart monitor and saw Adrian's rhythm suddenly spike into a deadly arrhythmia.

Vance had a cold, satisfied smirk on his face.

Clara realized with absolute horror that the bag was filled with a lethal paralytic.

She grabbed a heavy steel defibrillator paddle from the cart and swung it directly at the doctor's head.
