Chapter 11 - The Hitwoman’s Dilemma

The cold steel of the suppressed pistol felt impossibly heavy in Stella's hand.

Jonah Navarro stared down the barrel of the gun without a single flinch.

He was completely paralyzed from the waist down, totally exhausted from the shipyard explosion, and entirely at her mercy.

Yet, he looked at her not with fear, but with a profound, piercing curiosity.

"Ten million dollars," Jonah noted calmly, closing the encrypted tablet and resting it on his lap.

"That is a significant payout for a freelance assassin."

Stella’s hand shook slightly, the adrenaline from the burning warehouse crashing hard against the reality of her mission.

"I am not a freelancer, Jonah," Stella whispered, her finger resting cautiously on the trigger.

"I work directly for the cartel syndicate attempting to buy out your corrupt politicians."

Jonah nodded slowly, processing the information with the cold logic that made him a feared crime lord.

"You were planted in my home to gather leverage," Jonah deduced.

"And when Victor failed to eliminate me tonight, they activated you to finish the job."

Stella swallowed the lump in her throat, forcing herself to maintain a professional, merciless exterior.

"You should have left me to suffocate in that underground vault," she said bitterly.

"If I had, you wouldn't have been there to pull me out of the burning warehouse," Jonah replied smoothly.

He leaned back against his pillows, completely exposing his chest to her weapon.

"So, what is the hesitation, Stella?" Jonah asked softly.

"You have the perfect opportunity, the weapon, and the financial incentive."

Stella stared at the man she had just kissed passionately less than an hour ago.

She had spent months studying his routines, discovering his weaknesses, and preparing for this exact moment.

But over those months, she had also seen his fierce loyalty, his hidden vulnerability, and the immense burden of his empire.

She realized with sickening clarity that she could not pull the trigger.

Stella cursed violently and lowered the pistol, flicking the safety back on with a sharp click.

"I can't do it," Stella admitted, tossing the gun onto the velvet armchair across the room.

Jonah did not look surprised; a faint, knowing smile touched the corner of his mouth.

"I know," Jonah replied quietly.

"That is why I transferred the ten million dollars into your account twenty minutes ago."

Stella completely froze, staring at him in absolute shock.

"You transferred the money?" she stammered, her mind struggling to comprehend his statement.

"To make your cartel handlers believe you successfully completed the assassination," Jonah explained, tapping the tablet.

"As of five minutes ago, the underworld believes Jonah Navarro is dead, and you are a highly successful operative."

Stella collapsed into the velvet chair, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of his manipulation.

"Why would you fake your own death?" Stella asked, running a shaking hand through her messy hair.

"Because the only way to expose the corrupt politicians pulling the strings is to watch how they react to a vacuum of power," Jonah stated fiercely.

"And I need you to help me hunt them down from the shadows."
