Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The burning shipyard cast a warm, flickering orange light across their faces as they finally pulled apart.
Stella felt a profound, overwhelming sense of absolute safety and victory in Jonah's strong arms.
They had successfully defeated the traitors, rescued an innocent girl, and secured the massive empire.
Jonah's backup security forces finally arrived in heavily armored SUVs to secure the perimeter and escort them home.
They returned to the quiet, secure Navarro estate as the golden morning sun began to rise.
Stella helped Jonah transfer into his comfortable bed, ensuring his legs were properly positioned to prevent spasms.
She walked into the adjoining bathroom to wash the blood and soot from her exhausted hands.
She stared at her reflection in the mirror, allowing herself to finally believe that the terrifying nightmare was completely over.
She had found a man she deeply cared for, and she was no longer drowning in crippling poverty.
Stella dried her hands and walked back into the grand bedroom with a soft, happy smile on her face.
Jonah was lying quietly in his bed, staring intensely at a small, encrypted tablet he had retrieved from his safe.
He did not look up when she entered the room, his jaw clenched so tightly she could see the muscle twitching.
"What is wrong, Jonah?" Stella asked, her heart suddenly pounding violently against her ribs.
Jonah slowly turned the tablet around so she could clearly see the bright, glowing screen.
It was a highly classified, digital bank statement from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
The account belonged entirely to Stella, and it showed a massive, recent deposit of ten million dollars.
The deposit was officially authorized by the same corrupt syndicate politicians Jonah had been actively blackmailing.
"You weren't sent here by the nursing agency at all, were you, Stella?" Jonah asked, his voice completely devoid of any emotion.
Stella felt the entire room violently spin around her as her perfectly crafted cover story completely unraveled.
May you like
She slowly reached into the pocket of her scrub pants and pulled out a small, suppressed pistol.
"You really are too smart for your own good, Jonah," Stella whispered coldly, aiming the weapon directly at his chest.
