Chapter 5 - The Fake Badges

Elena collapsed to her knees on the hardwood floor, the breath completely knocked out of her lungs.
"How do you know about that?" she gasped, her dark, terrible secret finally exposed to the light.
She had hit a pedestrian on a rainy night twelve months ago, panicked, and driven away without calling an ambulance.
Marcus had found out about it and used it to blackmail her into the affair, trapping her in a cycle of fear and guilt.
"I am the one who quietly bought the damaged car from the auto shop and crushed it to protect you," Daniel confessed bitterly.
He had known about her crime for a year, using his vast resources to erase the evidence because he actually loved her.
"You protected me, but now you called the cops to turn me in?" Elena sobbed, feeling utterly destroyed.
Daniel shook his head slowly, his eyes fixed on the heavy oak front door as heavy footsteps approached the porch.
"I didn't call the police, Elena, and those men outside are absolutely not real cops," Daniel stated flatly.
Sarah gasped, looking desperately around the room for a place to hide.
"Real patrol officers don't carry suppressed submachine guns, and they don't disable neighborhood streetlights before an arrest," Daniel explained.
The loud, aggressive pounding on the front door shook the picture frames on the hallway walls.
"Police Department, open this door immediately or we will breach it!" a gruff, aggressive voice shouted from the porch.
Daniel walked over to the dining table and calmly closed his black notebook, slipping it into the inner pocket of his jacket.
He realized that the missing two million dollars belonged to a very dangerous criminal syndicate, and they had come to collect it from the framed scapegoat.
"Get under the dining table and do not make a single sound," Daniel ordered Sarah, who quickly scrambled beneath the heavy mahogany wood.
He grabbed Elena by the arm and pulled her roughly to her feet, pushing her toward the kitchen archway.
"They are here to torture you for the money you supposedly stole," Daniel warned her grimly.
Before Elena could even process the horror of her situation, the front door was violently kicked open, splintering the wooden frame.
Four men dressed in incredibly authentic police uniforms stormed into the foyer, aiming their heavy weapons directly at Daniel.

The lead officer pulled off his police cap and smiled a wicked, familiar smile that made Elena's blood run completely cold.
"Hello, little sister, it has been a very long time," Leo, Elena's estranged and highly dangerous brother, sneered as he racked his weapon.
