Chapter 1 - The Trap is Set

The afternoon was quiet, too quiet.

From the study window, Daniel watched as the sun hid behind the city buildings, painting the sky orange.

He had his eyes fixed, his heart tired, and a decision that weighed more than any other in his life.

On the dining table, there was a closed box, an envelope, and a black notebook.

Three objects in less than an hour would change the course of their marriage.

The front door clicked open, followed by the familiar sound of high heels clicking against the hardwood floor.

Elena walked in humming a cheerful pop song, her face glowing with a bright, carefree smile.

She dropped her expensive designer purse on the entryway bench, completely unaware of the storm waiting for her.

She thought her afternoon at the luxury hotel with her lover had been a perfectly executed secret.

Daniel stepped out of the shadows of the hallway and leaned against the doorframe.

He watched his wife smooth out her dress and check her lipstick in the hall mirror.

"You look incredibly happy for someone who just spent five hours at a boring marketing seminar," Daniel said evenly.

Elena jumped slightly, startled by his sudden appearance, but quickly recovered her perfect, deceitful smile.

"It was a great networking event, honey, I made a lot of valuable connections," she lied smoothly.

She walked toward the kitchen to pour herself a glass of wine, but stopped dead in her tracks.

Her eyes locked onto the center of the mahogany dining table.

The closed wooden box, the thick manila envelope, and the battered black notebook sat perfectly aligned under the chandelier.

Her bright smile instantly vanished, replaced by a pale mask of sheer panic.

She recognized the wooden box immediately, because it was the one she kept hidden in the back of her closet.

"Open it," Daniel commanded, his voice devoid of any warmth or emotion.

Elena's hands trembled as she slowly unlatched the wooden box and lifted the lid.

Inside sat the secret prepaid burner phone she used exclusively to communicate with Marcus.

She looked up at Daniel, her breath catching in her throat as she realized he knew everything.

But the real terror struck when Daniel reached over and flipped open the battered black notebook.

Elena froze, unable to speak, as she saw the emblem stamped on the first page, an emblem Marcus had warned her about in hushed, terrified whispers.
