Chapter 3 - The Wife's Revenge

Elena stumbled backward, her legs barely able to support her own weight as the doorbell rang a second time.
She looked at Daniel, hoping to find a shred of the gentle husband she had taken for granted, but his eyes were like ice.
"Open the door, Elena, or she is going to break a window," Daniel instructed, crossing his arms over his chest.
Elena slowly walked to the foyer, her hands shaking so badly she could barely turn the brass deadbolt.
She pulled the door open to reveal Sarah, Marcus's wife, standing on the porch with a furious, unyielding glare.
Sarah was not crying, and she did not look like a broken, betrayed woman.
She stormed past Elena into the house, dropping a heavy leather briefcase directly onto the entryway floor.
"You really are as stupid as Marcus said you were," Sarah sneered, looking Elena up and down with utter disgust.
Elena shrank back against the wall, completely overwhelmed by the shame and the sudden invasion of her home.
"I am so sorry, Sarah, I never wanted to ruin your family," Elena sobbed, covering her face in her hands.
Sarah laughed, a harsh, bitter sound that echoed off the high ceilings.
"You didn't ruin my family, sweetheart, Marcus ruined it all by himself a long time ago."
Sarah walked into the dining room and gave Daniel a brief, professional nod.
Elena watched in absolute shock as her husband pulled out a chair for her lover's pregnant wife.
"You two know each other?" Elena gasped, feeling the room spin dangerously around her.
"Sarah has been my inside informant at Marcus's firm for the last six months," Daniel revealed calmly.
He explained that Sarah had discovered Marcus's embezzlement scheme and approached Daniel's firm for protection.
They had orchestrated the hostile takeover together to ensure Sarah got her rightful half of the company's hidden assets.
Elena realized that she was nothing more than a pawn in a massive, high-stakes game of corporate chess.
"I brought the final ledger, Daniel," Sarah said, opening her briefcase and pulling out a red folder.
Sarah slammed the folder onto the table next to the black notebook.
"There is just one massive problem we didn't anticipate," Sarah stated, her professional tone suddenly cracking with genuine fear.
"The two million dollars Marcus embezzled under Elena's name is completely gone from the offshore accounts."
Daniel frowned, quickly flipping through the banking documents Sarah had just provided.

"Marcus didn't steal that money, Daniel," Sarah whispered, looking terrified.
"The digital signature on the massive wire transfer belongs entirely to Elena."
