Chapter 2 - The Corporate Assassin

The silence in the dining room was so heavy it felt like it could crush the breath right out of Elena's lungs.
She stared at the silver emblem of a roaring wolf stamped inside the black notebook.
"You are the Wolf of Wall Street, the corporate liquidator Marcus is terrified of," Elena whispered, her voice shaking violently.
Daniel pulled out one of the dining chairs and sat down, gesturing for her to do the same.
For five years, Elena had believed she was married to a boring, mid-level accounting manager who worked long hours.
She never knew he was the ruthless shadow investor who bought bankrupt companies and tore them apart for profit.
"Marcus told you his company was being hostilely taken over by a shadow firm, didn't he?" Daniel asked calmly.
Elena swallowed hard, remembering how Marcus had cried in her arms last week about losing his entire career.
"I am the man who bought his company, Elena, and I did it specifically to destroy him," Daniel confessed without blinking.
Tears welled up in Elena's eyes as she tried to calculate a way out of this nightmare.
"Daniel, please, it was a mistake, he manipulated me into feeling lonely!" she pleaded, reaching across the table.
Daniel didn't flinch, nor did he accept her desperate attempt at physical contact.
Instead, he slid the thick manila envelope across the polished wood until it rested against her trembling hands.
"I didn't just fire your lover, Elena, I bought every single ounce of his massive gambling debt."
Elena opened the envelope, pulling out a stack of high-definition photographs and legal contracts.
The photos showed Marcus not just with Elena, but with three other married women over the past year.
The legal contracts showed that Marcus had secretly used Elena's personal signature as collateral for a two-million-dollar loan.
"He set you up to take the fall for his embezzlement, and the bank is going to take this house," Daniel explained smoothly.
Elena let out a heartbroken sob, realizing the man she thought loved her had just used her as a financial shield.
Just then, the sharp sound of the doorbell echoed through the large, quiet house.

Daniel stood up and adjusted his watch with a cold, calculated smirk.
"You should probably answer that, Elena, because Marcus's pregnant wife is standing on our porch, and she is extremely angry."
