Chapter 1 - The Midnight Drive

Griffin gripped the steering wheel of his sports car as the engine roared into the rainy Seattle night.

He had promised the little girl on the phone that he was coming.

He shattered every speed limit in the city to reach the modest duplex in the Fremont neighborhood.

When he pulled up to the curb, the flashing red lights of an ambulance were already illuminating the dark street.

Griffin threw his car door open and sprinted across the wet lawn.

Two paramedics were rolling a stretcher out the front door.

Sloan Callaway lay completely motionless on the white mattress.

Her face was dangerously pale, and an oxygen mask covered her mouth.

Griffin felt his heart stop as he stared at the woman he had never stopped loving.

Ten years had passed, but she was still as breathtakingly beautiful as the day she left him.

Behind the stretcher, two identical little girls held onto each other with trembling hands.

They had Sloan's dark hair, but the moment they looked up, Griffin felt the air leave his lungs.

They had his piercing, unmistakable gray eyes.

A police officer blocked Griffin from stepping any closer to the ambulance.

Griffin ignored the officer and looked directly at the braver of the two girls.

"Are you Hazel?" he asked softly.

The little girl nodded and wiped a tear from her cheek.

"I am Griffin," he said, watching as the paramedics loaded Sloan into the back of the ambulance.

Before he could say another word, the lead paramedic rushed out of the vehicle with a terrified expression.

"We need police escorts to Seattle General immediately," the paramedic shouted.

Griffin grabbed the man's shoulder and demanded to know what was happening.

The paramedic looked at the billionaire with absolute dread in his eyes.

"She didn't just collapse from exhaustion," the man warned.

"Her blood pressure is crashing because someone slipped a lethal dose of synthetic poison into her coffee."
