Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

Lauren’s eyes widened in sheer panic as my calm, unwavering voice echoed across the quiet tarmac.

I explained to the FBI agents that my late husband had died five years before the criminal syndicate even existed.

I also pointed out that the manila envelope she was holding was completely unsealed and entirely empty.

It was nothing more than a desperate, pathetic bluff from a cornered animal.

Realizing her final trick had failed, Lauren collapsed onto the metal stairs and began to cry hysterically.

Federal agents swiftly moved up the stairs, separated her from the children, and placed her under arrest.

The Florida Department of Children and Families safely handed Lauren's two kids over to their biological father, who had been searching for them for years.

I walked over to the squad car where Daniel was sitting in the backseat with his head bowed in shame.

He looked up at me with tear-stained cheeks and begged me to use my trust fund to hire him a good defense attorney.

He offered to testify against Lauren and give the FBI everything they needed, but only if I promised to let him share custody of Noah.

He actually believed he still had the right to be a father after abandoning his son in an airport.

I looked at my son, feeling a profound sense of closure mixed with a deep, lingering sorrow.

I told him that Noah did not have a father anymore, and I walked away without looking back.
