Chapter 1 - The Airport Echoes

The busy terminal of Cleveland Hopkins Airport buzzed with the sound of rolling suitcases and overhead announcements.
I held my grandson tightly against my chest, feeling his small heart racing against mine.
The airport security officer handed me a formal incident report to sign.
He explained that child abandonment in a public facility was a serious criminal offense in the state of Ohio.
I signed the document without a single moment of hesitation.
My son Daniel had chosen to follow his cruel wife onto a plane, leaving his own flesh and blood behind.
I dialed the number of Margaret Vance, the most ruthless family law attorney in the city.
She answered on the second ring and listened to my explanation with cold, professional silence.
Margaret told me to keep Noah at the airport because Child Protective Services was already on the way.
I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking the authorities would immediately grant me emergency custody.
Ten minutes later, a stern social worker arrived with two uniformed police officers.
She did not look at me with sympathy.
Instead, she gently guided Noah behind her and handed me a legal notice.
She stated that Noah was being placed in state foster care immediately.
I demanded to know why they were taking my grandson away from his only safe family member.

The social worker looked me dead in the eye with a terrifying expression of pity.
She said that my daughter-in-law had filed a medical report claiming I suffered from severe dementia and violent outbursts.
