Chapter 5 - The Dark Secret

The reality that my son was now a wanted fugitive felt like a heavy stone in my chest.

I locked all the doors and windows in my apartment, fearing they might try to come back for Noah.

Noah sat quietly at the kitchen table, drawing pictures of airplanes on a piece of scrap paper.

He looked up at me with sad, hesitant eyes and asked if he could tell me a secret.

I sat across from him and promised that he could tell me absolutely anything.

He unzipped his small backpack and pulled out a glossy, colorful brochure.

He explained that Lauren had not just left him at the airport as a random punishment.

She had taken his passport and told him he would be going away for a very long time.

I opened the brochure and felt a sickening wave of nausea wash over my entire body.

It was an advertisement for a highly controversial, offshore disciplinary camp located in a remote part of Central America.

The facility was notorious for using physical abuse and isolation to break troubled children.

Lauren had intended to ship my sweet, innocent grandson to a foreign prison camp to get him out of her way forever.

The airport abandonment was simply a chaotic, failed backup plan when the transport service did not show up.

My phone suddenly rang with an incoming call from an unknown, untraceable number.

I answered it cautiously, hearing the chaotic sounds of highway traffic in the background.

Daniel’s frantic voice begged me to send him ten thousand dollars in cryptocurrency immediately.

He cried that Lauren had dragged him into something far worse than child abandonment.
