Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Pen

The fluorescent lights of the airport security office seemed to hum louder as the social worker’s words sank in.
Lauren had meticulously planned this cruel abandonment long before they ever packed their bags for Florida.
She had filed the fraudulent medical report three months ago to ensure I could never legally claim Noah.
I refused to let a piece of paper tear my grandson out of my arms.
I pulled my cell phone from my purse and called my primary care physician, Dr. Aris.
I put him on speakerphone right in front of the social worker and the police officers.
Dr. Aris loudly confirmed that my cognitive health was absolutely perfect and that I had never shown any signs of dementia.
He offered to email my complete, untainted medical records to the social worker immediately.
The social worker reviewed the incoming files on her tablet and sighed heavily.
She realized Lauren had filed a malicious, false report to manipulate the system.
She signed an emergency placement order, officially releasing Noah into my temporary custody.
We drove back to my apartment in silence, the weight of the day pressing heavily on our shoulders.
I made Noah a warm cup of cocoa and tucked him into the guest bed with fresh blankets.
Just as I turned off the bedside lamp, my phone began to vibrate violently in my pocket.
It was a text message from my son, Daniel.
The message warned me that if I did not drop the police charges against Lauren immediately, he would cut me off completely.

He reminded me that he was the sole executor of my late husband’s massive trust fund.
He promised to leave me entirely penniless and homeless by the end of the week.
