Chapter 7 - The Intruder

I grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the stove and pushed Noah behind the kitchen island.

I placed a finger to my lips, silently begging him not to make a single sound.

The front door creaked open, and a tall, shadowy figure stepped into my dark apartment.

The intruder carried a tactical flashlight, sweeping the narrow beam across my living room furniture.

He was not a desperate fugitive, and he certainly was not my son.

I waited until he stepped onto the hardwood floor of the kitchen before I swung the skillet with all my strength.

The heavy metal struck his shoulder, sending him crashing into the refrigerator with a loud groan.

The police officers stationed outside heard the commotion and immediately burst through the open front door with their weapons drawn.

They pinned the groaning intruder to the floor and secured his wrists with heavy steel handcuffs.

The officers searched his pockets and pulled out a leather wallet containing a private investigator license.

The man confessed that Lauren had hired him hours ago to break into my home and retrieve Noah.

She needed my grandson to act as a human bargaining chip to force me to transfer the stolen money.

The investigator also admitted that he knew exactly where Lauren and Daniel were hiding.

He revealed that they were currently sitting at a private airstrip near Miami, waiting to board an illegal charter flight to Cuba.
