Chapter 8 - The Puppet Master

Julian crashed heavily onto the concrete floor, completely entangled in the thick ropes of the cargo net alongside Evelyn.
He had survived the brutal fight at the house and tracked her here to exact revenge for abandoning him to the police.
Evelyn struggled violently beneath the heavy ropes, firing her suppressed pistol blindly into the dark warehouse.
One of the stray bullets struck Julian squarely in the leg, causing him to scream in agonizing pain and drop the knife.
I did not waste a single second watching the two villains destroy each other in the center of the room.
I sprinted forward and grabbed Emily, rapidly untying the thick ropes binding her small wrists to the chair.
I scooped her tightly into my arms and ran toward the dark shadows where Elena was waiting frantically.
Elena threw her arms around our daughter, weeping uncontrollably as she covered Emily's face in desperate kisses.
I told them to run toward the truck and hide while I ensured that nobody followed us out of the shipyard.
I turned back toward the center of the warehouse just as Evelyn managed to cut herself free from the heavy net.
She stood up, her grandmotherly clothes torn and covered in dirt, holding the gun with a perfectly steady hand.
She aimed the weapon directly at my chest, her eyes burning with an intense and furious hatred.
Julian was bleeding heavily on the floor, laughing a pathetic and broken laugh as he watched us with pure malice.
Evelyn calmly stated that she would just kill me now and forge my signature on the bloodstained documents later.
I looked around desperately for any kind of weapon, but I was entirely empty-handed and completely exposed.
She pulled the trigger, and a deafening crack echoed loudly through the cavernous space of the empty warehouse.
I braced myself for the burning impact, but the bullet completely missed my chest and struck the concrete wall.
Evelyn gasped loudly and dropped her weapon, clutching her right shoulder as blood rapidly bloomed across her shirt.
I turned around and saw Sarah standing in the doorway of the warehouse, holding a smoking police revolver.
She had followed us from the motel and taken the weapon from one of the corrupt officers we left at the bank.
I rushed forward and kicked Evelyn's dropped gun far across the floor into the dark corners of the room.
I pinned the bleeding woman to the concrete, securing her hands behind her back with the ropes from the chair.
Sarah kept her weapon trained on Julian, ensuring he did not attempt any sudden or desperate movements on the floor.
I looked at my sister with a profound sense of gratitude, silently thanking her for saving my life once again.

Suddenly, the screech of heavy tires echoed from the shipyard entrance as dozens of vehicles surrounded the building.
I grabbed Sarah's arm and prepared to fight the massive army of corrupt police officers arriving to kill us.
