Chapter 1 - The Murky Pool

I pulled Emily straight into my arms, holding her so tightly I thought my ribs might crack.
She buried her filthy face into my shoulder and trembled like a leaf in a winter storm.
"Daddy, please do not look," she whispered again, her voice breaking with absolute terror.
I wanted to focus only on the warmth of my daughter, but my eyes were inevitably drawn to the green water.
Three heavy black trash bags floated near the deep end of the murky swimming pool.
They were tethered to the metal pool ladder with a thick and algae-covered nylon rope.
The plastic bags were abnormally shaped, bulging in terrifying ways that made my blood run completely cold.
I gently set Emily down on the patio concrete and promised her I would be right back.
She grabbed my shirt sleeve with her tiny bruised fingers and begged me to simply take her away.
I had to know if the woman I had once loved was currently decaying at the bottom of that water.
I grabbed a long aluminum pool skimmer from the edge of the patio and reached out toward the closest bag.
The heavy black plastic resisted my pull, bobbing sluggishly as if it were filled with solid meat.
I hooked the knot of the nylon rope and dragged the bag aggressively onto the wet concrete tiles.
A foul and coppery smell immediately hit my nose, causing my stomach to churn violently.
I pulled a pocket knife from my jeans and sliced a long opening down the center of the dark plastic.
I fully expected to see Elena's blonde hair or her familiar silver wedding band shining in the light.
Instead, a man's severed arm slid out of the opening and slapped wetly onto the patio.
Wrapped around the bloody wrist was a custom gold watch that I recognized instantly.
It was the exact same expensive watch I had gifted my private investigator three weeks ago to look into Julian's background.
My brain struggled to process the horrific reality of the mutilated body lying at my feet.
I realized with a sickening wave of dread that Julian had discovered the investigation long before I did.
I had sent a good and honest man to his gruesome death simply because I wanted peace of mind.
Emily whimpered behind me, scrambling backward until her small back hit the metal bars of the cage.
Suddenly, the sliding glass door of the house clicked open with a sharp metallic sound.
I spun around just in time to see Julian stepping out onto the patio holding a twelve-gauge shotgun.
He was wearing a pristine white dress shirt, looking entirely too calm for a man standing in a slaughterhouse.
He racked the shotgun with a deafening clack that echoed loudly through the quiet suburban neighborhood.

Julian pointed the dark barrel directly at my chest, his eyes completely devoid of any human emotion.
"I was genuinely wondering when you would finally show up to your own crime scene," Julian said with a chilling smile.
