Chapter 5 - The Betrayal

I slammed my fists aggressively against the steering wheel, completely refusing to believe the horrifying accusation.
Sarah and I had grown up protecting each other from our own abusive parents in a profoundly broken home.
She was the absolute only person in the world I trusted with my life and the life of my daughter.
Elena insisted with absolute certainty that she had recognized Sarah's distinct voice on the speakerphone.
I felt a sickening knot form deep in my stomach as fragmented memories suddenly began to perfectly align.
Sarah had been asking oddly specific questions about Emily's inheritance and legal guardianship for several months.
She had also recently filed for massive personal bankruptcy after a failed business venture completely drained her savings.
I had just willingly handed my terrified daughter directly over to the desperate woman who wanted to steal her fortune.
I pressed the gas pedal fully to the floor, driving the stolen truck recklessly toward the motel three towns away.
The rain began to pour heavily from the dark sky, turning the winding roads into a dangerous slick of black asphalt.
We arrived at the cheap roadside motel just as a deafening crack of thunder shook the entire valley.
I pulled the truck behind the main office and ordered Elena to stay inside the locked vehicle no matter what happened.
I pulled a heavy tire iron from beneath the passenger seat and crept silently toward the room Sarah had rented.
The exterior light above room number four was flickering wildly, casting long and erratic shadows across the wet concrete.
The wooden door to the room was hanging slightly ajar, the lock completely splintered from a violent forced entry.
I pushed the door open with the tire iron raised, fully prepared to strike down anyone hiding inside.
The small motel room was completely dark and in a state of absolute, chaotic disarray.
The cheap lamps were shattered on the floor, and the thin bedsheets were torn aggressively from the mattress.
I found Sarah lying unconscious near the bathroom door, a deep and bleeding gash running across her forehead.
I dropped the tire iron and rushed to her side, checking her pulse with trembling and frantic fingers.
She groaned and slowly opened her eyes, wincing in severe pain as the bright lightning illuminated the ruined room.
I grabbed her shoulders and violently demanded to know exactly where she had taken my daughter.
Sarah coughed and looked at me with an expression of pure confusion and unadulterated terror.
She swore on her life that she had never betrayed me and had absolutely no idea about the trust fund.
She explained that she had brought Emily into the room and was simply preparing a warm bath to calm her down.
Suddenly, the door had been violently kicked open by a heavily armed woman wearing a dark tactical mask.
The woman had brutally struck Sarah with the butt of a handgun before snatching Emily directly from the bed.
I realized with a crushing wave of guilt that Elena had completely misunderstood the conversation she overheard.
Julian had not been speaking to Sarah on the phone; he had been speaking to someone else entirely.
Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated in my pocket with an incoming call from an unknown, highly restricted number.
I answered the phone, demanding loudly to know who was currently holding my child hostage.
May you like
A cold and highly familiar voice echoed through the speaker, causing the blood in my veins to freeze entirely.
It was Evelyn Harris, the sweet and elderly neighbor who had originally pointed me toward the bags in the backyard.
