Chapter 3 - The Ticking Clock

I sat in the dark alleyway, my mind racing violently through a hundred impossible and terrifying scenarios.

I knew the police had likely already secured the perimeter of the house by now.

If I drove back there, I would be immediately arrested for murder while a massive bomb detonated inside.

I needed to get Emily to a secure location before I could even attempt a suicidal rescue mission.

I pulled out my cell phone and dialed my sister Sarah, the absolute only person in the world I could trust.

I frantically explained the situation and begged her to meet me at an abandoned diner just outside city limits.

Sarah agreed instantly, her voice thick with panic and profound confusion over the sudden chaos.

I drove carefully through the back roads, strictly avoiding major intersections and highway traffic cameras.

We arrived at the dilapidated diner, hiding the car behind a rusted dumpster in the deep shadows.

Sarah pulled up moments later in her unassuming sedan, rushing out to wrap Emily tightly in a warm blanket.

I kissed my daughter on the forehead and promised her that everything was going to be completely fine.

I instructed Sarah to drive to a motel three towns over and pay for the room entirely in untraceable cash.

I watched them drive away into the night, feeling a massive piece of my heart leave with them.

I knew my own car was heavily compromised, as Julian had definitely given my license plate to the police.

I used a heavy rock to smash the window of an old pickup truck parked abandoned behind the diner.

I hotwired the ignition using skills I had learned working at a mechanic shop in my reckless youth.

The engine roared to life, and I sped back toward the affluent neighborhood where Elena was trapped.

I parked two streets away and crept silently through the thick bushes dividing the massive properties.

The front of the house was completely illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of five police cruisers.

Officers were stringing yellow crime scene tape across the front porch and interviewing terrified neighbors.

I slipped through the shadows of the backyard, incredibly grateful for the tall privacy panels Julian had recently installed.

The patio was swarming with forensic technicians examining the black bags and documenting Julian's unconscious body.

I crawled on my stomach through the wet grass until I reached the small egress window leading to the basement.

The glass was heavily reinforced, but I used a small piece of ceramic from a broken pot to quietly shatter the corner.

I unlocked the rusted metal latch and slipped headfirst into the pitch-black darkness of the underground room.

The air smelled heavily of damp concrete and metallic copper wire, causing my heart rate to spike dangerously.

I flicked on my phone's flashlight, illuminating a small and entirely soundproofed concrete cell.

Elena was tied tightly to a heavy wooden chair in the absolute center of the suffocating room.

Her eyes were wide with pure terror, and her mouth was secured with a thick strip of silver duct tape.

Strapped across her chest was a crude but highly complex explosive vest covered in intricate wiring.

The digital timer on the front of the vest was glowing brightly in the dark, illuminating her pale skin.

I rushed forward to untie her, but I completely froze when I read the glowing red numbers on the screen.

The timer had exactly forty-five seconds left before it blew the entire foundation to pieces.
