Chapter 2 - The Desperate Escape

Julian kept the heavy weapon aimed perfectly at my heart as he slowly walked down the patio steps.

He explained that he had used my stolen credit card information to purchase the bags and the cage.

The police were already on their way, responding to an anonymous tip he had made about a deranged father.

Julian was going to shoot me in self-defense, perfectly framing me for the gruesome murder of the investigator.

I realized I had absolutely no choice but to fight a man holding a loaded and deadly weapon.

I gripped the aluminum pool skimmer tightly behind my back, calculating the terrible distance between us.

I asked him where Elena was, desperately hoping the question would distract him for just a fraction of a second.

Julian laughed a dark and hollow laugh, gesturing lazily toward the house with his chin.

He stated confidently that I would be joining my ex-wife in the darkness very soon.

Before he could pull the trigger, I hurled the aluminum pole directly at his smug face.

The metal pole struck Julian aggressively across the bridge of his nose with a highly satisfying crunch.

He screamed in sudden agony and fired the shotgun blindly into the air as he fell backward.

The deafening blast shattered the glass patio door and sent jagged shards raining down onto the concrete.

I did not hesitate for a single second as I lunged forward across the slippery patio tiles.

I tackled him violently at the waist, driving my shoulder hard into his ribs and knocking the wind from his lungs.

We crashed onto the wet grass, rolling dangerously close to the edge of the murky and blood-stained pool.

Julian was younger and stronger, but I was fueled entirely by the pure primal rage of a protective father.

He dropped the shotgun and drove a brutal punch into my jaw, causing my vision to blur and spin.

I tasted warm copper in my mouth as I frantically scrambled to pin his muscular arms down into the mud.

I reached wildly for anything heavy, and my fingers wrapped securely around a large decorative garden stone.

I smashed the stone against the side of his head with absolutely everything I had left in my exhausted body.

Julian went entirely limp, his eyes rolling back into his head as he lost consciousness on the lawn.

I threw the stone aside and scrambled to my feet, gasping for air as my chest heaved uncontrollably.

I sprinted over to Emily, scooping her small and fragile body securely into my arms.

I kicked the wooden side gate open and sprinted down the driveway toward my parked car.

The distant wail of police sirens was already echoing loudly through the quiet residential streets.

I jumped behind the steering wheel and slammed the gas pedal directly to the floor.

The tires screeched against the asphalt as we tore out of the neighborhood just as a cruiser turned the corner.

I looked over at Emily, who was clutching her knees tightly and staring blankly at the dashboard.

I asked her if she knew where her mother was hiding, praying she would say Elena was safely out of town.

Emily slowly turned her head to look at me, her eyes completely devoid of childhood innocence.

She whispered that her mother was still inside the house, trapped permanently in the secret basement room.

I slammed on the brakes, pulling the car violently into a dark alleyway behind a strip mall.

I asked her why Julian would lock her mother in a basement if they were happily married.

May you like

Emily started to cry, her tiny shoulders shaking uncontrollably in the dim light of the vehicle.

"Julian strapped a heavy vest with blinking red numbers to her chest and told her not to move," she sobbed quietly.
