Chapter 6 - The Neighbor's Secret

Evelyn Harris spoke with a chillingly calm and professional tone that completely betrayed her grandmotherly appearance.
She ordered me to listen very carefully if I ever wanted to see my daughter breathe again.
She explained that Julian was nothing more than a greedy idiot she had hired to facilitate the kidnapping.
He had gotten sloppy and overly emotional, forcing her to aggressively intervene and clean up his massive mistakes.
She demanded that I bring the physical trust fund transfer documents to her immediately to finalize the payout.
I told her the documents were securely locked in a safety deposit box at a massive bank downtown.
Evelyn laughed a dry and humorless laugh, stating she already knew exactly where they were kept.
She gave me exactly one hour to retrieve the paperwork and deliver it to an abandoned shipyard on the coast.
If I was even one minute late, she promised to send Emily back to me in several small and horrific boxes.
The line went dead, leaving me standing in the ruined motel room with a profound sense of absolute despair.
I helped Sarah to her feet and apologized profusely for ever doubting her fierce loyalty to our family.
I instructed her to stay hidden in the motel and call an anonymous ambulance for her bleeding head wound.
I ran back out to the stolen truck and quickly explained the terrifying new reality to Elena.
Elena was completely paralyzed by shock, unable to comprehend that her friendly neighbor was a criminal mastermind.
We sped toward the downtown banking district, knowing the police would be actively patrolling the streets looking for us.
We parked the truck in a dark alleyway two blocks from the massive and imposing financial institution.
The bank was heavily illuminated, but the security guard at the front desk was sound asleep in his chair.
Elena explained that she had an emergency access key card for the automated vault that operated strictly after hours.
We slipped into the lobby through the side maintenance door, moving silently across the highly polished marble floors.
Elena swiped her card at the heavy steel vault door, holding her breath as the biometric scanner flashed a bright green.
The thick metal door hissed open, revealing hundreds of small metal boxes stacked endlessly along the reinforced walls.
We quickly found her designated box and used the physical key to pull the heavy metal drawer free.
Inside the box was a thick stack of legal documents and a small encrypted flash drive containing the account codes.
I grabbed the documents and stuffed them deep into the inner pocket of my damp jacket.
We turned to leave the vault, feeling a brief glimmer of hope that we could successfully make the exchange.
As we stepped back into the main lobby, the bright overhead security lights suddenly snapped on with a loud click.
Standing in the absolute center of the room with their weapons drawn were four heavily armed police officers.
The sleeping security guard had actually been a clever decoy, and they had been waiting for us the entire time.

The lead officer aimed his gun directly at my chest and ordered me to drop to my knees immediately.
He smiled a crooked smile and told me that Missus Harris had already paid them handsomely to acquire the documents.
