Chapter 4 - The Defusal

I dropped to my knees in front of Elena, my hands trembling violently as I inspected the deadly device.

She let out a muffled scream through the duct tape, violently shaking her head to tell me to run.

I absolutely refused to leave the mother of my child to die alone in the cold darkness.

I gently peeled the tape from her mouth, apologizing repeatedly for the pain it caused her bruised skin.

She gasped for air and sobbed, begging me to leave immediately and focus entirely on keeping Emily safe.

I ignored her desperate pleas and focused entirely on the chaotic mess of red and blue wires crossing her chest.

I knew absolutely nothing about bomb defusal, and the timer was rapidly ticking down past thirty seconds.

The explosive blocks were wired in a sequential loop, meaning cutting the wrong wire would trigger immediate detonation.

I frantically shined my flashlight around the dark basement, desperately searching for any kind of miraculous solution.

My eyes landed on a large industrial tank of liquid nitrogen sitting in Julian's makeshift tool corner.

Julian had always bragged arrogantly about his expensive and bizarre hobbies, including rapid freezing techniques for culinary arts.

I grabbed the heavy metal tank and dragged it roughly across the concrete floor toward the wooden chair.

The digital timer ticked past fifteen seconds, beeping with a terrifying and steady electronic rhythm.

I aimed the nozzle directly at the large battery pack powering the detonator mechanism on the explosive vest.

I turned the heavy valve completely open, unleashing a massive blast of freezing white vapor.

The liquid nitrogen covered the battery pack entirely, dropping the temperature by hundreds of degrees in mere seconds.

The extreme cold caused the internal chemical reaction of the battery to completely and instantaneously stall.

The glowing red numbers flickered wildly before dying completely at exactly three seconds left on the clock.

I collapsed onto the cold floor, gasping for air as the immediate threat of fiery death finally passed.

Elena wept uncontrollably, her entire body shaking as I carefully unbuckled the frozen vest and tossed it far away.

I pulled my pocket knife and sliced cleanly through the thick zip ties binding her wrists and ankles.

I helped her to her feet, supporting her weak legs as we moved quickly toward the egress window.

We climbed out into the cool night air, carefully avoiding the flashlights of the police officers still investigating the patio.

We sprinted blindly through the shadows of the neighboring yards until we reached the stolen pickup truck.

I slammed the truck into gear and drove us far away from the flashing lights and the organized chaos.

Elena sat in the passenger seat, wrapping her arms tightly around herself to stop the violent and persistent shivering.

I asked her why Julian had suddenly turned into a psychotic murderer after two years of seemingly peaceful marriage.

Elena explained that Julian had recently discovered the massive trust fund her late father had secretly established for Emily.

The fund was worth tens of millions, but it would only transfer to Julian if both Elena and I were legally dead.

I asked how he planned to get away with murdering a private investigator and framing me for the massive explosion.

Elena looked at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated dread that made my stomach completely drop.

She whispered that Julian was not acting alone in this highly orchestrated and deeply funded criminal conspiracy.

She had overheard him speaking on the phone with his secret partner just moments before he locked her away.

The partner had explicitly promised to secure Emily while Julian handled the explosives and the frame job at the house.

I asked her who the partner was, praying it was a stranger or a corrupt lawyer we could easily hide from.

Elena placed a trembling hand on my arm and told me Julian's partner was my own sister, Sarah.
