Chapter 7 - The Cornered Wolf

The SWAT officers raised their automatic rifles, aiming directly at my chest.

The Chief of Police stepped forward with a smug, victorious smile.

He held a megaphone and ordered me to surrender the children immediately.

He promised that if I gave them up, my death would be quick.

I pulled Maya behind me and tightened my grip on Leo.

I knew these men were not here to arrest me legally.

They were here to bury the evidence forever.

I slowly raised my hands in the air, pretending to surrender.

The Chief laughed and signaled two officers to step forward with handcuffs.

As they approached, I kicked a heavy electrical junction box on the tunnel wall.

Sparks showered the wet floor, plunging the entire tunnel into absolute darkness.

I grabbed Maya and sprinted blindly down a narrow maintenance shaft.

Gunfire erupted behind us, bullets ricocheting wildly off the concrete walls.

We navigated the tight, winding corridors using only memory and instinct.

We finally burst out into the freezing night air at the city docks.

Row after row of empty shipping containers provided perfect cover.

I hid the children inside a rusted container and locked it from the outside.

I promised them I would come back when it was perfectly safe.

I turned around to face the army of corrupt cops swarming the docks.

I only had one handgun and two extra magazines.

Then I saw Rebecca stepping out of a black SUV, holding a weapon of her own.
