Chapter 3 - The Sniper in the Dark

I threw my entire body across the hospital bed.

I shielded Leo and Maya just as a suppressed bullet tore through the mattress.

The fake nurse used the distraction to sprint out into the hallway.

I grabbed both children and pulled them down to the cold linoleum floor.

Maya started to cry softly.

Leo covered his sister's mouth with his small hand to keep her quiet.

He was so incredibly brave for a six-year-old boy.

I knew the sniper would take another shot if we moved past the window.

I pulled a smoke grenade from my tactical belt and hurled it into the center of the room.

Thick gray smoke instantly filled the air, blinding the shooter outside.

I scooped up Maya in my left arm and tucked Leo under my right.

We crawled blindly through the smoke until we reached the hallway door.

I kicked it open and ran toward the emergency stairwell.

The sounds of heavy boots echoed from the floor below us.

The men hunting us were professionals, and there were dozens of them.

I barricaded the heavy metal fire door with a medical cart.

Leo looked up at me with tears streaming down his dirty face.

He whispered that his father had left a secret box at the bank for this exact day.

He said the key was hidden inside his cast.

Before I could ask him anything else, the metal door behind us exploded inward.
