Chapter 5 - The Public Enemy

I stared at the microchip resting in my bloody palm.

Ethan had been a civilian accountant, completely removed from my criminal world.

There was no reason for him to possess military-grade encryption technology.

I plugged the chip into my secure laptop located in the safehouse.

A massive folder of encrypted files began to load on the screen.

Suddenly, the television in the corner of the room flashed with a breaking news alert.

Rebecca was standing in front of a dozen microphones at a police press conference.

She was crying hysterically, wiping fake tears from her eyes.

She told the cameras that her dangerous mafia brother-in-law had violently kidnapped her children.

The Chief of Police stood right behind her, offering his full support.

He announced a massive statewide manhunt for Thomas Moretti.

He claimed I was armed, unstable, and a direct threat to the children's lives.

I realized the trap had been perfectly set.

If I fought the police, I would lose the children in the eyes of the law forever.

If I surrendered, Rebecca and her secret partner would execute us all in custody.

I looked back at the laptop screen as the files finally decrypted.

The documents were financial ledgers belonging to my own syndicate.

They proved that my underboss, Victor, was stealing millions and working with the police.

My brother had discovered the corruption and was murdered for it.

The final file on the drive was a video recording.

I clicked play, and the blood drained completely from my face.
