Chapter 1 - The Dark Basement

My tires screamed against the asphalt as I sped toward the house.
The image of Leo's broken leg was burning a hole in my mind.
I left four of my best men at the hospital to guard the children.
Nobody was going to touch my brother's blood ever again.
When I arrived at the property, my enforcer Marcus was waiting on the porch.
He did not say a word to me.
He simply pointed toward the open doorway leading down into the basement.
I walked down the wooden stairs.
The smell of mold and dried urine hit my nose immediately.
In the center of the dark room was a heavy steel dog cage.
Inside the cage was a thin blanket and a single plastic water bowl.
Scratched into the concrete floor were tally marks made by a small child.
There were dozens of them.
My vision blurred with a rage I had not felt since my early days in the mafia.
Marcus stepped up behind me and handed me a small glass vial.
He found it hidden beneath the floorboards near the cage.
It was my brother's heart medication.
The pills inside the bottle were completely different from his actual prescription.
Ethan did not die from a random heart attack.
His wife had poisoned him.
Suddenly, a cheap burner phone sitting on the basement stairs began to ring.
I picked it up and pressed the speaker button.

A deep, mechanical voice echoed through the dark room.
The voice asked if the two little problems had finally been permanently solved.
