Chapter 4 - The Underground Tunnels

The blast knocked us all to the ground.
Ears ringing, I fired blindly into the smoke to push the attackers back.
I grabbed the children and dragged them down the remaining flight of stairs.
We burst into the hospital's underground utility tunnels.
These maintenance corridors were a maze of steam pipes and dark shadows.
I carried Leo on my back while Maya clung desperately to my neck.
We ran until my lungs burned and my legs felt like lead.
I found a heavy iron grate leading to the city's old sewer system.
I pried it open and helped the children climb down into the darkness.
We waded through ankle-deep water in complete silence.
The echoing sounds of the hitmen faded away above us.
We finally reached an abandoned subway station that I used as a secret safehouse.
I set the children down on a dusty mattress and locked the reinforced steel door.
Leo was burning up with a severe fever.
His broken leg was severely infected and needed immediate medical attention.
I knew I could not take him to a real doctor without being tracked.
I pulled out my combat knife and sterilized the blade with a lighter.
I told Leo I had to cut the cast open to get the key and fix his leg.
He nodded bravely and bit down on a piece of leather.
As I sliced through the plaster, a small metal object fell into my hand.

It was not a bank key.
It was a highly encrypted military microchip.
