Chapter 9 - The Steam Room

The loading dock instantly became a chaotic, blinding nightmare of thick, burning fog.
Daniel shouted in panic, firing his suppressed handgun wildly into the thick white steam.
I dropped to the floor, crawling frantically toward Marcus to pull him out of the line of fire.
I grabbed the surgical scalpel from his pocket and quickly sliced through the thick plastic zip ties binding his wrists.
"We have to get Emily," I whispered, pulling him behind a massive industrial laundry cart for cover.
We moved blindly through the scalding fog, guided only by the sound of the idling van.
I bumped into the cold metal railing of the stretcher and grabbed it tightly.
Emily was still completely unconscious, oblivious to the terrifying warzone surrounding her.
Marcus and I pushed the heavy stretcher toward the emergency exit doors on the far side of the dock.
The steam began to clear slightly near the ventilation fans, exposing our escape route.
Just as we reached the heavy steel doors, a dark figure stepped out of the fog to block our path.
Daniel stood there, coughing heavily, but his gun was aimed directly at Emily's head.
"If I cannot have the money, nobody will," Daniel screamed, his eyes wide with absolute madness.
I stepped in front of the stretcher, willing to take the bullet to protect my patient.

Suddenly, the heavy steel exit doors behind Daniel were violently blown completely off their hinges.
A dozen heavily armed FBI agents swarmed through the smoke, shouting commands and aiming laser sights directly at Daniel's chest.
