Chapter 6 - The Basement Descent

I stared at the empty bed, a wave of sheer terror washing over my entire body.
They had abducted a critically ill patient right out of the recovery ward.
I ran to the nurse's station and checked the internal security camera feeds on the main monitor.
The grainy black-and-white video showed two men in surgical scrubs wheeling Emily away on a transport stretcher.
They were heading directly toward the freight elevator that connected to the underground loading dock.
"They are going to put her in a van and make her disappear forever," I told Marcus.
I grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall and handed Marcus a sharp surgical scalpel.
"Find a hardwired landline in the basement maintenance office and call the FBI field office directly," I ordered him.
"I am going to the loading dock to stop them from taking her."
Marcus nodded bravely and sprinted down the opposite hallway.
I threw open the door to the concrete emergency stairwell and ran down five flights of stairs as fast as I could.
My lungs burned, but the image of Emily's purple fingers fueled my desperate adrenaline.
I finally reached the heavy metal door leading to the underground parking structure.
I pushed the door open quietly and stepped into the cold, damp basement.
The massive rolling garage doors were slowly opening to let a black van inside.
I crept behind a row of industrial dumpsters, raising the heavy fire extinguisher.

Before I could take another step, a cold metal cylinder was pressed firmly against the back of my head.
"You really should have just stayed in the emergency room, Dr. Jenkins," Daniel whispered in my ear.
