Chapter 2 - The Capsule

The horrific stench of decaying tissue filled the small trauma room, forcing Marcus to take a step back.

Emily's body suddenly began to convulse violently on the bed.

"She is crashing, we need a crash cart and a dose of epinephrine right now," I yelled over the blaring alarms.

Marcus sprinted out of the room to grab the emergency supplies.

I quickly reached into the rotting wound with a pair of sterile forceps.

I clamped down on the smooth titanium capsule and pulled it free from her arm.

It was heavy, covered in blood, and completely sealed with a biometric lock.

Before I could place it in an evidence bag, the trauma room doors violently burst open.

Daniel had broken away from the security guards and lunged directly toward me.

"Give me that capsule, it belongs to me," he screamed like a madman.

He shoved me hard against the medical cabinets, causing the capsule to slip from my fingers.

During the chaotic struggle, I managed to kick the capsule under the heavy hospital bed where he could not see it.

Marcus and the guards rushed back in, finally pinning Daniel to the floor.

I grabbed the defibrillator paddles and successfully shocked Emily's failing heart back into a stable rhythm.

She was immediately prepped and rushed upstairs for emergency surgery to save her arm and her life.

As the room finally cleared, a local police officer walked through the door.

He did not ask if I was okay or take a statement about the assault.

He walked directly up to me, rested his hand on his gun, and demanded I hand over the stolen property I took from Mr. Harris.
