Chapter 7 - The Hostage Situation

I froze completely, my grip tightening around the handle of the fire extinguisher.
Daniel forcefully grabbed my arm and pushed me out into the open loading dock area.
He was holding a suppressed handgun, his expensive suit now ruined and wrinkled.
Two massive men in fake medical scrubs were standing next to Emily's stretcher near the idling black van.
Emily was still unconscious, her arm wrapped in fresh, bloody bandages from the surgery.
"Where is the SD card, Sarah?" Daniel demanded, his voice echoing in the empty concrete room.
I stood tall, refusing to show this monster even an ounce of fear.
"I gave it to the FBI an hour ago, Daniel," I lied, hoping to buy some time.
Daniel laughed, a cruel, mocking sound that bounced off the walls.
"You are a terrible liar, Doctor," he said smoothly.
"Dr. Thorne is monitoring the cameras, and he confirmed you never made contact with anyone outside this building."
He pointed the gun directly at my chest, his finger resting heavily on the trigger.
He explained that Emily was the only one who could authorize the massive offshore transfers using her retinal scan.
Once he had the money, he was going to kill her and everyone who helped her.
I realized that the titanium capsule was never meant to protect the data; it was a cruel prison to ensure she could not run away without dying of sepsis.
"Hand over the drive, and I might let you live," Daniel lied.
I shook my head, silently preparing to swing the heavy extinguisher at his skull.

Daniel smiled wickedly, pulled a small walkie-talkie from his pocket, and pressed the button.
"Officer Vance, bring the nurse out here right now," Daniel commanded into the radio.
