Chapter 1 - The Standoff

I stood my ground, staring directly into Daniel Harris's cold, calculating eyes.

He stepped perfectly in front of his wife's hospital bed, using his body to physically block my access to her injured arm.

The monitors behind him began to beep with a frantic, terrifying rhythm as Emily's blood pressure dropped even further.

I knew that every single second we wasted arguing was bringing her closer to a fatal septic shock.

"Mr. Harris, I am not asking for your permission anymore," I said with absolute authority.

"Under the emergency medical consent laws, I have the right to intervene when a patient is facing an immediate, life-threatening crisis."

Daniel let out a sharp, arrogant laugh that sent a chill down my spine.

"You touch my wife, and I will sue you and this hospital into absolute bankruptcy," he threatened.

I did not blink or back down from his aggressive posture.

Instead, I reached into my pocket and pressed the panic button on my hospital pager.

Within seconds, two massive security guards rushed into Trauma Room 2.

"Please escort Mr. Harris into the hallway, he is interfering with emergency medical procedures," I commanded.

Daniel screamed and fought wildly, but the guards easily overpowered his manicured frame and dragged him out of the room.

I immediately grabbed the heavy cast saw from the medical cart and turned it on.

The loud, buzzing blade sliced smoothly through the thick, dirty fiberglass covering Emily's arm.

Nurse Marcus helped me pry the rigid shell apart, revealing a smell so horrific that my eyes instantly began to water.

The flesh was severely necrotic, but the infection was not caused by a simple broken bone.

There was a deep, surgically precise laceration carved into her forearm.

Embedded entirely inside her infected flesh was a small, waterproof titanium capsule.
