Chapter 8 - The Sniper's Mistake

The ultimate betrayal hit me like a physical punch to the stomach.

My trusted partner had been working for the international syndicate the entire time.

Ethan had fed Garrick my location and orchestrated the attack on the safe house.

"I am sorry, Sarah, but forty million dollars buys a lot of loyalty," Ethan said without a shred of guilt.

Garrick laughed out loud, triumphant and completely assured of his total victory.

He plugged the flash drive into a portable laptop to restore his frozen bank accounts.

I stood completely still, waiting for the exact moment his arrogance would blind him.

Garrick hit the enter key, expecting a confirmation screen to appear on the monitor.

Instead, the screen flashed bright red, and a massive digital skull appeared.

I had not given him the financial codes; I had given him a highly aggressive military computer virus.

The virus instantly permanently wiped his hard drives and triggered the warehouse's emergency lockdown protocol.

Heavy steel doors slammed down over the exits, trapping all three of us inside the dark building.

Ethan panicked and fired a wild shot at me, but I had already rolled behind a thick concrete pillar.

I drew my concealed weapon and shot out the overhead lights, plunging the warehouse into total darkness.

Garrick screamed in absolute fury, firing blindly into the shadows.

"You are going to die slowly for this!" Garrick roared into the pitch-black room.

My phone vibrated silently in my pocket with a single text message from Garrick's stolen network.

The message read: "I left your partner here to die; I am already at the diner with your mother."
