Chapter 12 - The Architect

The realization hit me with the destructive force of a freight train.

The man who had comforted my mother at my father’s funeral was the exact same man who ordered his execution.

Arthur Vance was the supreme architect of the Erebus network.

If the Deputy Director of the FBI was the head of the syndicate, there was absolutely no one in law enforcement I could trust.

I could not call the local police, and I could definitely not reach out to my former federal colleagues.

I was completely isolated, fighting a ghost who controlled the most powerful surveillance apparatus on the planet.

I left the storage facility and drove to a burner electronics store to purchase three untraceable prepaid cell phones.

I needed to extract my mother from the house before Arthur realized I was pulling at the threads of his criminal empire.

As I pulled onto my street, my tactical instincts instantly screamed that something was horribly wrong.

There were two black, unmarked utility vans parked idly at the end of my quiet suburban cul-de-sac.

They looked like standard cable repair vehicles, but the suspensions were heavily compressed by the weight of tactical armor.

I drove right past my own house, gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned entirely white.

Through my rearview mirror, I saw four men in dark windbreakers walking aggressively toward my front porch.

Arthur had not waited for me to figure it out; he had proactively sent a federal kill squad to silence us permanently.

I dialed my mother’s emergency burner phone, silently praying she had kept it fully charged.

She answered on the first ring, her voice tight with panic.

I ordered her to trigger the basement escape hatch and run through the storm drains to the secondary extraction point.

I told her to leave everything behind, grab the hidden emergency cash, and absolutely not look back.

I heard the terrifying sound of our heavy oak front door being kicked off its hinges just before the line went completely dead.
