Chapter 1 - The Hidden Camera

I sat in the dark of my home office, watching the blinking cursor on my encrypted laptop.
The security camera positioned above Garrick’s office door had been my first target.
I had installed it three weeks ago while he was supposedly at a charity golf tournament.
My mother thought I was just fixing a broken smoke detector in the hallway.
Now, my fingers flew across the keyboard as I bypassed the local network firewall.
Being a retired FBI agent meant I no longer had a badge, but I still had all my skills.
The screen flickered to life, showing a live feed of Garrick sitting at his heavy mahogany desk.
He was not reviewing real estate contracts or organizing church donations.
He was meticulously cleaning a silenced Heckler & Koch tactical pistol.
My blood ran completely cold.
A man with a domestic violence record legally cannot possess a firearm, let alone an illegal assassin's weapon.
I initiated a deep scan of the hard drive connected to his desktop computer.
Thousands of encrypted files began pouring into my secure server.
I recognized the financial routing numbers instantly from my days in the Violent Crimes Division.
Garrick was not just a wealthy, abusive husband.
He was laundering millions of dollars for an international weapons syndicate.
Suddenly, a loud, piercing alarm blared through my computer speakers.
His system had detected my unauthorized intrusion.

On the live video feed, Garrick stopped cleaning his weapon and slowly looked up.
He stared directly into the hidden camera lens and smiled a terrifying, knowing smile.
