The lump was a military-grade subcutaneous tracking device.

I found a rusty razor blade, a bottle of cheap vodka, and a roll of duct tape.
I poured the alcohol over the blade and told my mother to bite down hard on a folded towel.

I finally managed to extract a tiny, bloody metallic capsule and wrapped her arm tightly in tape.
I threw the tracker into the back of a passing freight truck, sending a false signal hundreds of miles away.
We were finally off his digital radar, but we were completely stranded and exhausted.
I walked to the payphone outside and dialed Ethan's emergency secondary number.

The line clicked open, but the voice that answered made my blood freeze in my veins.
"Your partner fought bravely, Sarah, but he is currently bleeding out on my floor," Garrick whispered softly.
