Chapter 18 - The Master Ledger

Arthur glared at me with absolute, unmitigated hatred as I dragged him toward the massive wall safe.
He was bleeding heavily from his shoulder, his aristocratic arrogance entirely shattered by raw, physical pain.
"If you open that safe, you unleash a political earthquake that will tear the bureau apart," Arthur warned, coughing up blood.
"That is exactly what I am counting on," I replied, shoving his face forcefully against the biometric retinal scanner.
The machine beeped softly, projecting a faint red laser across his eye before flashing a brilliant green.
"Now, authorize it," I commanded, pressing the blade of my knife gently against his throat.
Arthur swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he spoke the highly classified passphrase.
"Erebus absolute," he rasped into the small microphone.
The heavy steel bolts of the safe retracted with a loud, satisfying clack, and the massive door swung open.
Inside, resting on a velvet shelf, was a thick, black leather-bound ledger.
I pulled it out and flipped through the handwritten pages, my eyes widening at the sheer magnitude of the corruption.
It contained names of active senators, federal judges, and international defense contractors, all tied to illegal weapons money.
It was the absolute Holy Grail of criminal evidence, enough to completely dismantle the shadow government in a single night.
Outside, the sound of heavy rotor blades began chopping through the snowy mountain air.
Arthur smiled through his pain, his bloody teeth gleaming in the dim light of the office.
"You are too late, Sarah. My personal extraction team is already here," Arthur sneered triumphantly.
"They will burn this house to the ground with both of you inside."
I looked out the shattered balcony window and saw two massive, unmarked black helicopters descending rapidly onto the courtyard.
Dozens of heavily armed operators were already fast-roping down into the snow, forming a deadly perimeter around the house.

I looked at my mother, clutching the heavy ledger tightly against my chest.
We had the evidence, but we were completely trapped in a glass cage surrounded by professional executioners.
