Garrick’s voice was as calm and arrogant as a predator playing with its dying food.
I demanded to know if Ethan was still alive.
Garrick chuckled, a cold and terrifying sound that echoed through the dirty payphone receiver.
"He will survive if you bring me the decrypted flash drive containing my financial codes," Garrick promised.
He gave me the address of an abandoned shipyard on the edge of the city and hung up the phone.

I hid my mother in a crowded, brightly lit diner, instructing her not to move until I returned.
I stole a heavy pickup truck and drove toward the desolate, foggy harbor.
I parked outside the rusted warehouse and walked inside with the flash drive held high in my hand.
Garrick was standing in the center of the vast room, wearing a tailored suit and holding a handgun.
Ethan was tied to a metal chair beside him, looking battered but remarkably alert.
I tossed the drive onto the concrete floor, kicking it slowly toward Garrick's expensive leather shoes.
Garrick smiled, picked up the drive, and pointed his weapon directly at my heart.
"You really are a foolish woman, Sarah," Garrick mocked, preparing to pull the trigger.

Ethan walked over to Garrick, pulled out his own FBI issued firearm, and pointed it directly at my head.
