Chapter 7 - The Cartel Connection

The pieces of Samuel’s desperate puzzle finally slammed together in my mind.

He needed my absolute compliance, my quiet submission, and my signature to liquidate the estate and save his own life.

When dinner was late, it was not just about the food; he was spiraling out of control because his cartel deadline was approaching.

"He tried to kill me because my death would automatically transfer the remaining assets into his sole control," I realized aloud.

Marcus nodded gravely, keeping his eyes glued to the rearview mirror to ensure we were not being followed.

"Your digital protocol locked him out of the accounts, Victoria," Marcus said, referring to my call to Thomas.

Samuel was now trapped without a single dime to pay off the ruthless men coming for him.

Cynthia bandaged my burns as best as she could in the moving car, her hands shaking with adrenaline.

"We need to go to the police, Victoria, to the FBI," Cynthia pleaded desperately.

I shook my head, knowing that Detective Miller and the corrupt local precinct would just hand me right back to Samuel.

"We are going to set a trap, and we are going to use the cartel to spring it," I declared.

Marcus pulled the car into an abandoned warehouse district, shutting off the headlights to remain hidden in the shadows.

I used the laptop to hack into Samuel's secure corporate server, planting a fake GPS tracker location for him to find.

Just as the trap was fully set, Marcus’s burner phone rang loudly in the silent car.

Marcus answered it, his face turning completely pale as he listened to the harsh voice on the speaker.

"If you want to see your little accountant alive, Victoria, you will meet me at the office right now," Samuel threatened, holding Marcus's brother hostage.
