Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Ally

"Get in the car, Victoria, or I will kill the doctor right here," Samuel ordered with deadpan calmness.

Cynthia stepped in front of me, bravely trying to shield my burned body from the weapon.

Before Samuel could pull the trigger, a battered silver sedan came roaring down the alley at full speed.

The sedan violently T-boned Samuel’s SUV, shattering glass and setting off the airbags in a deafening crash.

The driver of the sedan kicked his door open and sprinted toward us with a tire iron in his hand.

It was Marcus, Samuel’s former corporate accountant who had been framed for embezzlement two years ago.

"Hurry up and get in my car before he regains consciousness!" Marcus shouted, waving us toward the battered sedan.

Cynthia and I scrambled into the backseat just as Samuel started kicking his jammed door open.

Marcus threw the car into reverse, spun the tires, and sped out of the alley into the city traffic.

My shoulder throbbed relentlessly, but I managed to ask Marcus why he had risked his life to save me.

"I have been tracking Samuel's finances ever since he ruined my career," Marcus explained grimly.

He tossed a sleek, encrypted laptop into my lap as we merged onto the desolate midnight highway.

I opened the screen and gasped as I read the decoded ledgers Marcus had spent years uncovering.

Samuel had not just stolen my family fortune out of simple greed or spite.

He had secretly laundered millions for the Vega cartel, and he had recently lost all of their money in a massive offshore gamble.

"They gave him until tomorrow to repay the debt, or they will execute him," Marcus revealed darkly.
