Chapter 5 - The Midnight Escape

There was no time to panic as I watched Joyce marching down the dim hallway toward my door.
I grabbed a pair of surgical scissors from the bedside table and quickly disconnected my vital monitors.
I wrapped a thick hospital robe over my bandages to hide the bright white gauze in the dark.
Just as the electronic lock beeped green, I slipped quietly into the adjoining private bathroom.
Joyce pushed the door open, her breathing heavy and erratic as she crept toward the empty bed.
She raised the massive knife and plunged it violently into the pillows, shredding the mattress in the dark.
While she was furiously stabbing the empty bed, I slipped out the main door and locked her inside the room.
I could hear her screaming and banging against the reinforced glass as I sprinted down the corridor.
Cynthia was waiting for me near the service elevator with a duffel bag full of civilian clothes and medical supplies.
"We have to get you out of this building before Samuel realizes his mother is trapped," Cynthia whispered urgently.
We took the freight elevator down to the underground parking garage, jumping at every mechanical sound.
The cold night air hit my face as we stepped out into the desolate alleyway behind the hospital.
Freedom felt so close until glaring headlights suddenly flooded the narrow alley, blinding us instantly.

A massive black SUV aggressively hopped the curb and slammed on its brakes, completely blocking our only exit.
The tinted window slowly rolled down to reveal Samuel aiming a suppressed handgun directly at my chest.
