Chapter 1 - The Unseen Eyes

The hospital room fell completely silent after Dr. Cynthia Stone mentioned the high-definition kitchen camera.
Samuel’s perfectly composed mask cracked for a fraction of a second as he processed her words.
He blinked twice, his jaw tightening as he stared at the physician in sheer disbelief.
"A camera?" Samuel echoed, his voice suddenly losing its smooth and practiced edge.
Joyce stepped back from the hospital bed, her theatrical tears drying up instantly as panic flashed across her aging face.
"That is impossible," Joyce blurted out before Samuel could stop her.
Cynthia crossed her arms and stared them down with the authority of a seasoned medical professional.
"The police are already on their way up here to review the footage," Cynthia said calmly.
I kept my eyes closed, silently thanking my past self for installing that hidden lens inside the smoke detector.
For months, I had been building a secret archive of their emotional and physical abuse.
Footsteps echoed heavily down the hallway, accompanied by the distinct crackle of a police radio.
Samuel quickly adjusted his expensive tie, plastering a confident smile back onto his face.
Two uniformed officers stepped through the curtain, but my heart sank when I heard Samuel's reaction.
"Detective Miller, it is so good to see you again," Samuel said warmly.
I dared to open my eyes just enough to see Samuel shaking hands with the lead detective like they were old friends.

The detective glanced at my burned body with complete indifference before turning back to my husband.
"Samuel, tell me what this nonsense is about a camera," Detective Miller said with a dismissive laugh.
