Chapter 2 - The Corrupt Badge

Cynthia immediately stepped between the detective and my bed, her posture rigid with professional outrage.
"My patient suffered deliberate third-degree burns, and there is video evidence of the assault," Cynthia stated firmly.
Detective Miller sneered at her, pulling a small notepad from his chest pocket with agonizing slowness.
"We will be the judge of that, Doctor," Miller replied condescendingly.
Samuel smoothly handed the detective a thick, sealed envelope that I immediately recognized as cash from my stolen accounts.
"My wife suffers from severe paranoia and often hallucinates these so-called cameras," Samuel lied effortlessly.
Miller nodded, slipping the envelope into his jacket without even looking inside.
"It sounds to me like this is a tragic household accident, Doctor," Miller declared loudly.
Cynthia threatened to call the medical board and the district attorney if Miller dismissed the case.
Miller simply smirked and ordered the uniformed officers to escort Dr. Stone out of the intensive care unit.
Once Cynthia was forced out of the room, Samuel and his mother stepped close to my bed.
"Did you really think a little hidden camera could stop me?" Samuel whispered into my ear.
Joyce dragged her fingernail painfully across my unburned arm, smiling wickedly as I fought the urge to scream.
"She will not make it through the night, Samuel," Joyce muttered coldly.

Samuel pulled a small syringe from his pocket and stared at my intravenous drip.
"Do not worry, Mother, her heart will just quietly stop beating in about ten minutes," Samuel whispered as he uncapped the needle.
