Chapter 10 - The House of Cards

"Let her go, Samuel, you have nowhere left to run," I warned him, stepping forward despite the cartel weapons drawn around us.
Just as Samuel reached for the stairwell door, the glass windows of the boardroom shattered inward with a deafening crash.
FBI tactical teams swung through the breached windows on ropes, flooding the room with blinding tactical lights and laser sights.
Marcus had tipped off his federal contacts before we ever left the car, timing the raid perfectly with the cartel's arrival.
"Drop your weapons!" the SWAT commander roared over the chaotic screaming.
The cartel enforcers surrendered immediately, dropping their heavy rifles to the floor rather than fighting a losing battle against federal agents.
Samuel froze in sheer terror, his grip on Cynthia loosening just enough for her to break free and dive to the floor.
Before Samuel could aim his weapon again, a federal agent tackled him hard, slamming his face into the shattered glass.
Detective Miller was dragged out of the stairwell in handcuffs a moment later, having been caught trying to flee the perimeter.
Joyce was sobbing hysterically as an agent read her Miranda rights, finally facing the consequences for her lifetime of cruelty.
Three months later, I stood on the balcony of my restored estate, breathing in the crisp morning air.
Samuel and Joyce were both facing federal sentences of twenty years without the possibility of parole.
My stolen assets had been fully recovered, and I was finally preparing to return to my legal career.
The nightmare was officially over, and my life was beautifully mine once again.
The peace was suddenly broken when I noticed a black, unmarked envelope resting ominously on my patio table.
I opened the heavy paper and pulled out a high-resolution photograph of myself standing on this exact balcony, taken from a distant sniper's vantage point.

A handwritten note on the back was penned in dark red ink, chilling my blood instantly.
"He owed us a lot more than just money, Victoria, and we are coming to collect the rest."
