Chapter 9 - The Audio Proof

The deafening gunshot echoed through the entire courthouse, instantly triggering the building's emergency lockdown alarms.

The stunned police officer finally snapped into action, tackling the two private security guards who tried to intervene.

I pinned Mom to the floor, wrestling the hot gun out of her hand and kicking it far down the hallway.

Dozens of armed court bailiffs swarmed out of the surrounding courtrooms, their weapons drawn and leveled at us.

"Get on the ground, everyone on the ground right now!" the lead bailiff screamed.

They roughly pulled me off Mom and secured both of us with heavy plastic zip-ties.

Mom immediately began sobbing hysterically, pointing her finger at me with fake, dramatic tears streaming down her face.

"She tried to shoot me, she has gone completely insane and is trying to kill my mother!" Mom lied beautifully to the crowd of officers.

The corrupt judge nodded in agreement, telling the bailiffs that I was a known kidnapper and a highly dangerous threat.

It was my word against the word of a wealthy woman and a respected judge.

Then, I remembered the heavy cell phone sitting securely in my back pocket.

"Officer, there is a voice recording on my phone from yesterday morning in the laundry room," I shouted over the chaos.

The officer retrieved my phone, unlocked the screen, and pressed the play button for the entire hallway to hear.

Mom's vicious, calculating voice echoed clearly from the phone speaker.

"Nobody is going to care who held the pen, because tomorrow you don't get another chance," her recorded voice threatened.

The corrupt judge turned pale, realizing that absolute proof of the premeditated fraud had just been broadcast to twenty armed witnesses.

Mom's expensive defense attorney suddenly burst out of the courtroom, holding a thick legal file in his shaking hands.

"I am officially withdrawing as counsel, because my client just lied about her identity to this court," the lawyer yelled over the sirens.
