Chapter 4 - The Midnight Run

I did not wait for Martha to finish her terrifying phone call.
I slapped the glass of water out of her hand, sending it crashing onto the kitchen floor.
I grabbed Grandma by her good arm and pulled her fiercely toward the back door of the house.
Martha dropped the phone and lunged forward, trying to grab the back of my jacket.
I shoved her backward into the kitchen counter and burst through the screen door into the night.
"Keep moving, Grandma, do not look back!" I shouted as we sprinted toward the dirt driveway.
An old, rusted pickup truck was parked near Martha's barn with the driver's side window rolled down.
I threw open the heavy metal door and practically shoved Grandma into the passenger seat.
I jumped behind the steering wheel and frantically searched the sun visor for a spare key.
A silver key dropped onto my lap, and I jammed it into the ignition.
The ancient engine roared to life with a deafening, sputtering cough.
I slammed the gearshift into drive and stepped heavily on the gas pedal.
The truck fish-tailed in the mud before launching down the dark, unpaved road.
I checked the rearview mirror, praying we had finally escaped the nightmare.
Suddenly, a massive pair of blinding LED headlights flared to life directly in front of us.

My mother's heavy SUV was blocking the only exit to the main highway.
She stepped out of her vehicle into the headlights, holding a long, glinting medical syringe in her right hand.
