Chapter 6 - The Burner Phone

The horrifying news broadcast made the entire diner spin around me.

Mom had expertly weaponized the police against us to ensure nobody would believe our story.

I pulled my baseball cap down low over my eyes and grabbed Grandma by the shoulder.

"We have to leave before someone in here recognizes us," I whispered urgently.

We snuck out through the emergency exit in the kitchen, completely avoiding the front windows.

I found a discarded, stolen license plate in the dumpster and quickly screwed it onto the back of our stolen truck.

We drove to a deserted gas station on the outskirts of the city to use a rusted payphone.

Grandma dialed her attorney's personal emergency number from memory.

A sleepy voice answered the phone after four long rings.

Grandma quickly explained the forged conservatorship and the terrifying ambush at the farmhouse.

The lawyer gasped loudly, his professional demeanor entirely shattering.

"Your daughter scheduled an emergency, closed-door hearing with a judge for eight o'clock this morning," the lawyer revealed.

He explained that if Grandma did not physically appear in court to contest the medical documents, Mom would win total control by default.

"We will be at the courthouse in twenty minutes," I promised the lawyer before hanging up.

I rushed back to the driver's seat and sped toward the downtown legal district as the sun began to rise.

We were only three blocks away from the massive stone courthouse when red and blue lights flashed in my rearview mirror.

A police cruiser pulled directly behind me, blaring its loud siren to signal me to pull over.
