Chapter 1 - The Broken Trust

I took the aluminum walker directly out of my mother’s trembling hands.

She stared at me with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.

I carefully positioned the walker in front of my grandmother so she could grip the handles.

Grandma pulled herself up from the cold laundry room floor with a heavy groan.

Her cast-covered wrist rested awkwardly against the padded bar.

"We are going back to your bedroom right now," I told Grandma softly.

Mom stepped directly into our path with her arms crossed over her chest.

"You cannot take her out of this room," Mom demanded.

"Watch me," I replied, stepping forward until Mom was forced to move aside.

I guided Grandma down the dimly lit hallway toward her master suite.

I could hear Mom pacing furiously in the kitchen, muttering under her breath.

We entered the bedroom, and I immediately locked the heavy wooden door behind us.

I helped Grandma onto the edge of her mattress and sat beside her.

"What exactly is happening tomorrow morning?" I asked her quietly.

Grandma took a deep, shaky breath and looked down at her lap.

"Your mother hired a predatory lawyer to draft a total transfer of my estate," she explained.

She told me the paperwork would give Mom absolute control over the house, the bank accounts, and the family business.

"She wants to strip me of everything before I have the chance to change my will," Grandma whispered.

I pulled out my cell phone to call the police and report elder abuse.

There was no cellular service available on my screen.

I walked over to the window to check the driveway, hoping to make a quick escape in my car.

My heart instantly dropped into my stomach.

My car was completely gone, and Mom’s heavy SUV was parked sideways to block the entire driveway.
