Chapter 2 - The Silent Prison

I rushed to the bedroom window and tried to push the glass pane upward.
The old wooden frame refused to budge even a single inch.
I realized with horror that thick metal screws had been freshly drilled into the window tracks.
Mom had anticipated that Grandma might try to escape the house.
She had systematically turned the entire master bedroom into a locked prison cell.
"She has been planning this for weeks," Grandma said, noticing my panic.
I walked toward the locked bedroom door and pressed my ear against the wood.
The house was terrifyingly silent, with no sounds coming from the kitchen or the living room.
"We have to find the actual documents to prove what she is doing," I whispered.
Grandma pointed her good hand toward the heavy oak dresser in the corner of the room.
"She hid a locked briefcase in the bottom drawer this morning," Grandma revealed.
I rushed over to the dresser, yanked the bottom drawer open, and pulled out the black leather case.
I used a heavy metal bookend from the nightstand to violently smash the combination lock.
The briefcase popped open, revealing a thick stack of legal documents stamped with a red seal.
I scanned the top page and felt the blood drain completely from my face.
It was not just an estate transfer document.

It was a medical conservatorship declaring my grandmother completely insane and permanently unfit to care for herself.
And the bottom of the document was already signed and stamped by my own trusted family doctor.
