Chapter 5 - The Medical Threat

My mother walked slowly toward the front of the truck with a terrifyingly calm expression.
She held the needle up in the harsh light, her eyes completely devoid of any maternal warmth.
"Turn off the engine and unlock the doors, right now," Mom demanded loudly.
I locked the doors immediately and rolled up the broken window as fast as I could.
"She is going to inject me with a heavy sedative to force my signature while I am unconscious," Grandma panicked.
I knew the rusted doors of the old truck would not keep a determined person out for long.
I shifted the heavy transmission into reverse and slammed my foot on the accelerator.
The truck lurched backward, spinning its tires furiously in the wet gravel.
Mom lunged forward and smashed the heavy handle of the syringe against my side window.
The glass cracked in a massive spiderweb pattern, but it miraculously held together.
I spun the steering wheel hard to the left, tearing through Martha's wooden fence and driving straight across the open pasture.
We bounced violently over the rough terrain, leaving Mom screaming in absolute fury behind us.
I did not stop driving until we reached the bright, neon lights of a 24-hour diner on the edge of the county.
We parked in the shadows behind the building and ran inside to hide in a back booth.
"We need to contact my personal attorney in the city before the sun comes up," Grandma instructed firmly.
I ordered us two cups of black coffee and looked up at the television hanging above the counter.
The breaking news ticker at the bottom of the screen was flashing a bright red alert.

A photograph of my face was plastered across the television screen.
The news anchor announced that I was a dangerous fugitive wanted for kidnapping a vulnerable, dementia-stricken adult.
