Chapter 7 - The Courthouse Ambush

I pulled the rusted truck to the side of the road, my hands shaking violently on the steering wheel.

A stern police officer walked up to my window with his hand resting cautiously on his service weapon.

"Step out of the vehicle with your hands raised," the officer commanded aggressively.

I opened the door and stepped out, holding my hands high in the air to show I was unarmed.

The officer immediately grabbed my wrists and slammed me against the side of the truck to apply heavy steel handcuffs.

"You are under arrest for the kidnapping and endangerment of an elderly woman," he stated coldly.

Grandma kicked her door open and marched around the front of the truck with absolute fury blazing in her eyes.

"Take those handcuffs off my grandchild immediately, you absolute fool!" Grandma shouted at the top of her lungs.

The officer stepped back in surprise, clearly not expecting his supposed dementia victim to be so articulate and aggressive.

"Ma'am, please calm down, you are confused and we are here to rescue you," the officer tried to soothe her.

"I am a retired state supreme court judge, and if you do not escort us to the courthouse right now, I will personally ruin your career," Grandma lied flawlessly.

The sheer authority in her voice made the young officer second-guess the entire situation.

He reluctantly agreed to put us in the back of his cruiser and drive us directly to the courthouse entrance.

We pulled into the underground parking garage and took the private security elevator up to the family court floor.

The elevator doors slid open, revealing the long marble hallway leading to the courtroom.

My mother was standing directly in front of the heavy double doors, flanked by two massive private security guards.

And the man standing next to her in the black judicial robes was the exact same judge who had signed her preliminary orders.
